Tatiana studied physics at Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) and then got her PhD in Electrical Engineering at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) in 2013. Before joining IIT at the end of 2017, she was assistant professor at at the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome (Italy, 2016-2017) and spent two post-doctoral periods at KU-Leuven (Belgium, 2013-2015) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA, 2015-2016) working on machine learning methods for computer vision and natural language processing.
She pioneered the research area of transfer learning for computer vision with the first principled algorithm able to exploit previous knowledge while learning the model for a new object category from few samples [PAMI, 2014]. Variants of this original algorithm showed significantly high performance in applications for the control of dexterous hand prostheses [TRO, 2013]. She has large experience in the area of domain adaptation [PRL 2015, CVPR 2018, ICRA 2018], multimodal learning [IJCV 2018] and worked on methods for learning from the Web [IROS 2017]. Google Scholar indicates for Tatiana more than 950 citations and h-index 17.
